Worked Example

Worked Example: Calculating Total Shift Hours

Suppose a freelancer or contractor works a shift from 9:15 AM to 5:45 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break:

Gross Time Elapsed
8h 30m
9:15 AM to 5:45 PM
Break Deducted
30 mins
Non-billable rest
Total Hours Worked
8.00 decimal hrs
480 total minutes

At a client billing rate of $35.00/hour, 8.00 decimal hours yields exactly $280.00 for the day. Adding a second 2-hour evening task via the shift accumulator brings the day's grand total to 10.00 hours ($350.00).

How to Calculate Total Hours Worked & Conversion Formulas

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. Choose a Preset or Custom Time: Click "9-to-5" or type custom start and end timestamps.
  2. Enter Break Duration: Enter any unpaid breaks in minutes (e.g. 30).
  3. Read Total Hours & Decimals: Note the decimal hours (e.g. 7.75) for your invoice or timesheet.
  4. Add to Shift Log: Click "Add Shift to Total" to stack multiple shifts or client assignments into one cumulative grand total.

Decimal Hours Conversion Formula

Elapsed Minutes = (End Time - Start Time)
Net Work Minutes = Elapsed Minutes - Break Minutes
Hours = Floor(Net Work Minutes ÷ 60)
Minutes = Net Work Minutes Mod 60
Decimal Hours = Net Work Minutes ÷ 60

Quick conversion rule of thumb: 15 minutes is 0.25 hrs, 30 minutes is 0.50 hrs, and 45 minutes is 0.75 hrs.
