- Zero Server Overhead: 100% private in-browser canvas execution.
How GIF Color Changing & Replacement Works
The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) indexes colors in an 8-bit color lookup table (LUT) containing up to 256 unique entries per frame. When you change GIF colors using this tool:
- Euclidean Distance Color Matching: The engine measures distance in three-dimensional RGB space
ΔE = √((ΔR)² + (ΔG)² + (ΔB)²). All pixels falling within your chosen tolerance threshold are smoothly translated into the target tone. - Alpha Transparency Preservation: Transparent index markers are carefully isolated, ensuring Discord emotes and website stickers don’t develop unwanted black halos.
- Duotone Gradient Remapping: By converting frame pixels into luminance values, duotone mapping paints shadows with one tone and highlights with another for high-impact retro aesthetics.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change only one specific color in a GIF?
Yes! That is exactly what the Selective Swap mode does. Set a low tolerance (between 20 and 45) to isolate only the target shade without affecting adjacent colors.
How do I change the background color of a GIF?
Click on the background area on the canvas to set it as the Source Color, then choose your new background color. If the background has gradients or noise, raise tolerance slightly.
Can I convert my animated GIF into a video file?
Yes, use our companion tool GIF to QuickTime (.MOV) to turn GIF animations into Apple ProRes/QuickTime or MP4 videos.
Is there any file size limit?
Because processing occurs locally inside your browser’s JavaScript memory, standard GIF files up to 25MB load smoothly on modern desktops and mobile browsers.
